All About Bukit Panjang

Bukit Panjang used to be a rural settlement but now, it is already a planned housing or suburban area.  It is found in the Western Part of Singapore.  Here, the development started in 1981 but the Housing Development Board estate arose in May 1985.  You may be wondering where the name Bukit Panjang originated.  Bukit in Malay lingo refers to a hill while Panjang means long.  Its name represents the area very well because the community has long stretches of hills and is rich in trees and greenery.  The place was initially called Zhenghua in an effort to change the names of places in Singapore to Mandarin.  This however was not received favourably by the community.  Thus the well-accepted name which is Bukit Panjang was retained.

Administration of the Community

 The Bukit Panjang Planning Area includes the housing area of the Housing Development Board, the Bukit Panjang New Town and the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.  The municipality is administered by the Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council.  The said council is responsible in supervising the commercial units, flats and apartments in Bukit Panjang.   The council is also tasked to maintain and improve the common areas of the HBD commercial and residential properties within the town.  These common areas include the water tanks, corridors, lobbies, and opens spaces. Through this type of governance, the environment of Bukit Panjang has remained organized and well-developed.

Transportation and Amenities

Although Bukit Panjang already has its own LRT station, there are still improvements being made with its transport infrastructure.  Its population is expected to rise over the years due to recent developments that can be readily observed in the district especially on housing projects.  New buses are being added to address the transportation needs of the residents and new flyovers are also being constructed.   An MRT station is also foreseen to be completed by 2015 which would surely make the area more accessible for commuters.  The Bukit Panjang Plaza is its most popular shopping center with its recreational facilities, restaurants and boutiques.  The shopping mall is very accessible to shoppers being located at the center of the town and is near the Bukit Panjang LRT Station and Bus Interchange.

The town is bounded in the south by the famous environmental site   Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and in the east by the Central Water Catchment, a vastly forested area.  The Zhenghua Park also serves as the resident’s venue for recreation with its fitness facility, playground and cycling and jogging track.  Its educational institutions include the Greenridge Primary and Secondary School and the Zhenghua Primary and Secondary School.  Compared to other towns in Singapore, Bukit Panjang is said to be quieter, more peaceful and conducive as a residential hub.

Generally, the Bukit Panjang community represents simple yet convenient living.   Because of the town council’s efforts, the town has a really clean environment. Routine and cyclical maintenance are also being performed by town council to achieve better living standards.     With all these growth, it is very likely that Bukit Panjang will also have a booming economy in the near future.

There is More in Singapore

If you think of Singapore, its popular tourist attractions would usually come to mind such as the Singapore Zoo and Botanical Gardens, the National Museum, the Little India Singapore, Boat Quay and Clarke Quay and of course the Universal Studios.  But if you are up for an adventure, you can explore and discover other destinations in Singapore. Singapore is also one of the countries with booming industries which attracts workers and professionals from abroad.  Some have even decided to settle with their family and find a home in Singapore.  So if you have decided to transfer to Singapore, think of the most ideal place for your family.

Where to Live in Singapore?

One ideal area for settling in Singapore is Bukit Panjang in the Central North-Western part of Singapore.  It is an area with mostly old and newly built apartments and condominiums suitable for urban living.  The name Bukit Panjang denotes “long spread of hill” which refers to the low hills ranging from Mandai to Bukit Timah.  It has an automated light rail transit system as well as buses as means of transportation.  Aside from that, it is near the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, bringing its residents closer to nature and the environment.  The Reserve is maintained to protect and preserve the flora and fauna of Singapore.

Here is some information that will make you choose Bukit Panjang as your next sanctuary:

·       Increasing number of housing projects in the area;

·       A well-planned area, mostly for residential purposes;

·       Accessible educational institutions for the children;

·       Various recreational facilities for you and your family such as shopping malls, clubs and a lot of parks;

·       A quiet and comfortable surrounding that is close to nature;

·       And tourist sites relatively near you!

Some of the spots in the area that will interest you are the Old Ford Factory and the Bukit Timah Hil.  The Old Ford Factory is a historical site which witnessed the surrender of the British to the Japanese in 1942 during the battle in Singapore in World War II.  It was originally established by Ford Motor Works as a car assembly plant but many battles were fought around it during the world war.  Presently, it is an exhibition gallery with an audio-visual theatre, has undergone restoration but its original façade was preserved.  The Bukit Timah Hill on the other hand, is considered the highest point in Singapore’s city-state.  It is in Bukit Timah where you can find the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

Bukit Panjang is also known for a number of its parks situated and one of its interesting features is the Bukit Panjang Park Connector.  It connects the Zhenghua Park to Bukit Panjang Park and provides recreational area for residents as well as to schools.  It is perfect for jogging and mountain biking.  The scenic view brought by the connector gives city dwellers a more refreshing feeling when they visit this area. If you are lucky enough, you may even spot wildlife species along the park connector.   You would also want to check out Bukit Panjang Community Library with its colour coding system and the Ten Mile Shop Houses and Ten Mile Junction if want to go shopping.
